African Youth Charter @20 Campaign: Reflect, Reimagine, Revitalize

Hosted by WGYD - African Union Women Youth and Gender Directorate

AU Organisation
March 04, 2025 to December 31, 2026

Introduction

The African Youth Charter (AYC), adopted in 2006, is a political and legal document that serves as a strategic framework to support national policies, programmes and actions for youth development in Africa. It defines youth empowerment and participation as central to Africa’s development and provides a framework for youth engagement, rights and responsibilities.

In 2026, the AYC will turn 20. The African Union Youth Division under the Women, Gender and Youth Directorate (WGYD), in collaboration with its partners, is launching the AYC@20 Campaign: Reflect, Reimagine, Revitalize. The campaign seeks to assess progress made, reignite momentum for implementation, and reimagine a future where the charter remains a living and dynamic document.

Objectives

  • Reflect: Take stock of the implementation and impact of the AYC across African Union Member States and youth organizations.
  • Reimagine: Engage youth, governments and civil society in envisioning the future of youth development in Africa aligned with Agenda 2063 and global development goals.
  • Revitalize: Mobilize renewed political will, resources, and partnerships to accelerate and strengthen the implementation of the AYC.
